Dog Houses & Straw
KHS can offer reduced-cost or free dog houses for owners that cannot afford one. We can also provide straw Fall-Spring to help keep dog houses insulated and dry.
Outdoor dogs in Michigan must have access to shelter that meets specific, minimum requirements.
(l) "Shelter" means adequate protection from the elements and weather conditions suitable for the age, species, and physical condition of the animal so as to maintain the animal in a state of good health. Shelter, for livestock, includes structures or natural features such as trees or topography. Shelter, for a dog, includes 1 or more of the following:
(i) The residence of the dog's owner or other individual.
(ii) A doghouse that is an enclosed structure with a roof and of appropriate dimensions for the breed and size of the dog. The doghouse must have dry bedding when the outdoor temperature is or is predicted to drop below freezing.
(iii) A structure, including a garage, barn, or shed, that is sufficiently insulated and ventilated to protect the dog from exposure to extreme temperatures or, if not sufficiently insulated and ventilated, contains a doghouse as provided under subparagraph (ii) that is accessible to the dog.
By helping dog owners comply with legal requirements, the quality of life for that pet improves. Educating owners reduces the risk of the pet being surrendered to a shelter, neglected or abandoned.
Need help?

If you've been contacted by law enforcement about providing shelter for your outdoor dog, please call us.

If you are aware of a dog without adequate shelter, contact the Animal Control department for your county. Officers can check the welfare of the animals at the home, and refer them to us as needed.
Can you help?

Many of the dog houses we provide have been donated (new or used) to us.
If you have a dog house you no longer need, we may be able to find a new home for it. Used dog houses must be clean and meet the minimum legal requirements.

Each year we purchase a number of dog houses and straw. We welcome monetary donations to help us purchase these items.
