Due to negligence on the part of pet owners, more than 5,000 animals are estimated to be abandoned in Kalamazoo County annually.

Education programs and counseling are available on such topics as responsible pet ownership, pet population control, bite prevention, safety around animals and animal behavior. Presentations are made to community and civic groups, and at educational events. Each year, the Kalamazoo Humane Society programs reach over 6,000 elementary students. These programs are intended to reach out to children at an early age in order to help them develop into responsible pet owners as adults.
